Mamavation Monday: Kicking ASS!
True determination can never be squashed!
This past week has been filled with great changes and even better choices. My husband and I got a Total Home Gym to help with our healthy living goals. We have decided to add in strength training 3 days a week. This is in addition to our 4 days of cardio and our new Gluten-Free diet.
Yep, Gluten-Free. I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. In addition, I have been diagnosed with Secondary Hyperparathyroidism. I am severely deficient in Vitamin D and Calcium so am taking supplements for that. In addition I have been taking a medicine for my thyroid. (All of this is connected to the Celiac Disease)
At first I was very upset, but sometimes disappointment is actually opportunity in disguise. I realized that a gluten free diet will force me to eat better and to focus on eating clean rather than indulging in all the overly-processed food that adds to my weight. The funny thing is that had I not taken the steps to have Weight Loss surgery, I would never have been diagnosed with these issues. Most doctors ignored my symptoms or chalked them up to my weight. Lo’ and behold, my weight was actually a symptom. All in all it has been a GREAT learning experience for me.
My Successes this past week
- Drinking 130 oz of water daily! I have not been able to reach 195 oz (which is half my body weight), but I have been steady at 130 oz.
- I am making smart choices about food– choosing fruit and veggies to snack on. Been using SparkPeople to track food (and activity)
- I have worked out 5 days in a row– even when I thought that I was too tired to do so.
I get weighed tomorrow at my nutritionist’s office, so I will post an update then. I also now have a Personal Trainer who will be helping me get better results from my workouts.
I’m DOWN 13 POUNDS. I am also down an inch in my hips, 1/2 inch in my thighs, and 1/2 inch my upper arm in just a week!
My goals for this week are:
- No television. My daughter and I need to get more active and while I don’t watch TV much, I do watch it more than I wish.
- 5 services of fruit and veggies a day.
- Go to bed by 12:30 AM every day
- Wake up by 8:00 AM every day
- Continue exercising every day.

What types of exercises do you do to mix up your routine?
I’m also always amazed at the amount of water you drink. I know I need to do better but after a while Water starts to taste funny to me.

Hi Laila– the water is a necessity now that I am moving so much. I find the more activity that I get in the thirstier I become. I start drinking water before I even get out of bed. I have a 8oz bottle next to my bed and down it. I drink water along with my coffee in the morning and I change it up with Crystal Light every now and then.
As for exercise: I do the Total Gym, Step Aerobics on EA ACTIVE More workouts, the EA ACTIVE 6 week challenge, Prevention’s Get Moving with Chris Freytag, Exercise TV (usually Leslie Sansone’s Walking programs), and of course the EA Active sports on Wii– boxing, basketball, volleyball, and baseball.

A food intolerance will help wake you up with what you are putting in your mouth FAST! I have food allergies and my learning curve was steep once my diagnoses came in. The great news is that not only will you be super savvy about your food but with a celiac diagnosis you will quickly notice how much better your body feels once you eliminate the wheat protein. As a note Nigella Lawson’s mother is celiac and she has some gluten free recipes in her arsenal as a result that are pretty good because she is Nigella Lawson after all.
Be well hon, and I want to see you take the challenge!

Thank you Kia. I ordered two cookbooks to help with the learning process. My daughter is allergic to all nuts so we are learning how to handle that as well. And thanks for the tips about Nigella Lawson– will check her out.
I’m not doing the Move It and Lose it Challenge (but thanks for the cheering).
That is too bad the doctors didnt test more…that stinks that they thought of the weight as the diagnosis not the symptom before now. Lots of luck on the gluten free diet. Congrats on your new home gym! Congrats on working out 5 days in a row…keep up the hard work!

Damn, girl!!! You’re AWESOME!!! I am so so so proud of you. Way to work it out. And the fact that you’ev now realized a major ingredient to your health in terms of addressing the celiac disease, is great. I’ve heard Elisabeth Hasselbeck has a good recipe book on Celiac disease, which she has as well. Look for that.…might be of interest. xoxoxox So proud and JEALOUS of your weight loss this week!!! Keep it up!

Thank you Paige– that is a total weight loss since March 20 (I think(. I did not weight in last week b/c my scale’s battery died. I heard about the Hasselback cookbook and will look into it. Between the celiac disease and the thyroid I finally feel like something is helping me for a change.

Congrats on your success and moving forward in this journey.
I love that one of your goals involves getting up at a certain time every day. One of the goals I set for myself at the beginning of this year was to be dressed and ready to go at 8:30 each weekday morning. I’ve found that if I don’t get up and at it early, my whole day turns hectic and I feel I’m constantly running late.
Looking forward to following your progress…

Thank you so much! I set that goal because I would stay awake until 3:00 am and then sleep until 10:30. When I awoke, the days was almost over. And my daughter (4 on the 27th of this month) was getting up at 7 and watching WAY too much tv for my liking. Like I’ve said before this is about more than weight. It’s about changing my life completely.
